Winter Solstice Canvas Print

The main nave of the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca is oriented 120 degrees east taking the North Pole by reference. In each of its ends there are corresponding large rosettes; the one pointing to the east, called large oculus for being one of the largest in Europe with over eleven feet in diameter, and the one located west.

Because of this orientation, during the winter solstice, shortly after dawn, the sun's rays that penetrate the rosette of the Trinity Chapel cross the main nave and go out through the western rosette. It's quite a sight to behold effect from the outside of the cathedral. The rosette located west slowly illuminates the darkness as the sun rises over the horizon. Inside, the light filtered through the stained glass rose window, just before reaching through the nave, is projected onto the walls of the west walls, forming a spectacular kaleidoscope of vivid colors.
